Datadog alerts on your iPhone

Datadog monitors arrive at their own priority when they trigger, and the same notification changes to Recovered when they recover.

N
DATADOG · nowTriggered: Host is Downweb-01 stopped reporting for 5 minutes
A monitor that triggers. When it recovers, this same notification changes to Recovered.

What you need#

  • Nowlark on your iPhone, and your key from Settings › Connect an App › Create Your Key. Copy it when it is shown, because it is shown once. It starts nlk_.
  • A Datadog monitor.

Add Nowlark to Datadog#

  1. In Datadog, open Integrations, find Webhooks and install it if it is not installed yet.
  2. On its Configuration tab, add a new webhook and set Name to nowlark.
  3. Paste the three values below into the matching fields: the URL, the Payload exactly as it is (Datadog fills in each $ value when it sends), and the Custom Headers with your own key in place of nlk_….

URL

https://nowlark.com/v1/hooks/datadog

Payload

{
  "title": "$EVENT_TITLE",
  "body": "$TEXT_ONLY_MSG",
  "transition": "$ALERT_TRANSITION",
  "alert_id": "$ALERT_ID",
  "cycle": "$ALERT_CYCLE_KEY",
  "scope": "$ALERT_SCOPE",
  "priority": "$ALERT_PRIORITY",
  "type": "$ALERT_TYPE",
  "link": "$LINK"
}

Custom Headers

{"Authorization": "Bearer nlk_…"}
  1. Save the webhook.
  2. In each monitor that should reach your iPhone, add @webhook-nowlark to the message. The next time that monitor triggers, it arrives on your iPhone.

Your key goes in a header, not in the address, so it is not shown wherever Datadog displays the URL.

What arrives#

In Datadog On your iPhone
Monitor triggers
"Triggered: Host is Down", with the monitor's message underneath. Tap it to open the event in Datadog.
Monitor recovers
The same notification changes to "Recovered: Host is Down". No second alert to clear.
Warning or no data
"Warning" or "No data", at Normal priority, whatever the monitor's priority.

When a monitor triggers, its priority sets the notification's: P1 is Urgent and breaks through Focus modes, P2 and P3 are High, P4 is Normal and P5 is Low. A monitor with no priority is High when it triggers.

Each alert arrives under the source Datadog. In the app's Sources tab you can give it a colour, and with the Upgrade Pass its own tone.

On a team channel#

Use a channel key instead of your own, and everyone on the channel gets the alert. When Datadog reports the monitor recovered, the alert is resolved on the channel too, and no later escalation step goes out for it. Channels and escalation covers the rest.
